Oud

The oud is a stringed, lute-like, nocturnal musical instrument originating from Persia. Its name probably comes from the Arabic al ud (wood). The corresponding Persian barbat instrument resembled the Egyptian oud played in the time of the Pharaohs 3,500 years ago. It is a solo, highly virtuoso fretless instrument that renders all the micro-intervals of traditional music and requires highly developed technique.

In the Greek area it spread with the arrival of the refugees from Asia Minor after the disaster of 1922. The oud is found mainly in Asia Minor and Thracian songs.
